A SOULFLO Therapy Guide
EMDR Consultation — What to Expect as a Consultee
Curated by SOULFLO Therapy — to ease the struggle of finding the right fit.
This guide is intended for licensed clinicians and EMDR-trained therapists seeking consultation, not for clients seeking therapy. If you're looking for EMDR therapy as a client, please see our EMDR Guide instead.
What Is EMDR Consultation?
EMDR consultation is required supervision specifically focused on your development as an EMDR clinician — distinct from general clinical supervision. Whether you're working toward EMDRIA Certification or simply want ongoing case consultation to deepen your EMDR practice, consultation hours with an EMDRIA Approved Consultant are where that development happens: reviewing cases, troubleshooting stuck points, and refining your application of the EMDR protocol under experienced guidance.
What to Expect as a Consultee
- Case-focused discussion. You'll bring real (de-identified) client cases to consultation — places where a case felt stuck, a protocol step felt unclear, or you want a second set of eyes before your next session.
- Protocol fidelity support. Your consultant helps ensure you're applying the 8 phases of EMDR accurately, not just generally familiar with the model.
- A relationship, not a one-off. Consultation works best as an ongoing relationship where your consultant gets to know your caseload and clinical style over time, rather than a single disconnected session.
- Group or individual formats. Group consultation offers the added benefit of learning from other consultees' cases and questions, often at a lower cost per hour; individual consultation offers more concentrated, personalized time.
Individual vs. Group Consultation
Individual consultation gives you focused, one-on-one time entirely centered on your caseload and questions — often the right choice if you have a specific complex case you want deep support on, or prefer a more private format.
Group consultation (such as our seven-week EMDR consultation group) offers structured, cohort-based learning alongside other consultees, with the added benefit of hearing how other clinicians work through similar stuck points. Many consultees find the group format valuable for building broader clinical pattern-recognition, not just resolving their own immediate cases.
How to Prepare for a Consultation Session
- Come with a specific case or question in mind, rather than a general "how am I doing" check-in — specificity is what makes consultation time most useful.
- De-identify client information appropriately before bringing a case to group consultation.
- Bring genuine stuck points, not just successes — consultation is most valuable when it's a space to be honestly unsure.
Toward EMDRIA Certification
If you're pursuing EMDRIA Certification, consultation hours with an EMDRIA Approved Consultant are a required component, alongside your EMDR training hours and clinical experience. An Approved Consultant can also support you through the broader certification application process, including documentation and case requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, consultation assumes completion of EMDR basic training (typically Parts 1 and 2); consultation builds on that training rather than replacing it.
